Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department reports sharp drop in murders

HARVEY, LA (WVUE) -

New numbers from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's office track a 52% decrease in the number of murders this year, compared to 2014.

According to a Wednesday news release from Sheriff Newell Normand's office, there were 13 murders in the parish between Jan. 1 and July 31, 2015.

That's in contrast to 27 murders during the same seven-month period last year. 

The latest crime report also tracks a 24% decrease in robberies this year, although assaults are up 16%, with 694 incidents between January and July, 2015, compared to 599 last year.

Sheriff Normand's office says the overall crime rate in Jefferson Parish is down 5% for the first seven months of the year.
