NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The transfer of prisoners to the New OPSO Correctional Complex is complete.

Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman says they finished moving 1,159 inmates to the new facility late Tuesday afternoon.

A news release from Gusman says the transfer fulfilled the order from U.S. Federal Court Judge Lance Africk to move all Orleans Parish inmates from substandard buildings.

"Moving more than 1,100 inmates across a series of buildings is not an easy task. The law enforcement professionals of the OPSO once again accomplished this job safely and effectively. I thank them and all of the other law enforcement agencies who made this effort a success," said Sheriff Gusman in the news release.

The move clears the way for OPSO to open the new intake and processing center Wednesday morning.

Gusman also says the move to the new facility will bring a change to a "direct supervision model"  management style.

He explains it is different because officers are now stationed inside the housing unit or pod and encourages direct interaction between staff and inmates.
