CHALMETTE, LA (WVUE) -

State police have identified the man shot dead by a St. Bernard deputy after he allegedly attacked another officer.

Tyrone Bass, 21, was shot and killed on Tuesday afternoon. Bass allegedly attacked a deputy, striking him in the head with an unknown object, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Another deputy then opened fire, killing Bass.

The incident happened just before 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Bernard Highway and Andres Street.

Louisiana State Police say that when a St. Bernard deputy approached Bass, the man attacked the officer with some kind of object. Police did not clarify why officers approached Bass.

"[The deputy] called for backup. A couple more officers showed up on scene. One of the officers was actually injured. He was sent to an area hospital," Trooper Evan Harrell said.

The injured deputy was released from the hospital about two hours after the shooting.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic.

"When we came out, we [saw] guns drawn. We saw a few shots fired off. They had one car blocking the scene so we didn't see it clear enough. But we seen a police body on the ground and another guy on the ground," one witness said.

Louisiana State Police are leading the investigation. They have not released the deputies' names nor the object the man used to injure the deputy.

"We are going to look into all that ballistics. We are going to look into anything and everything that we can. We'll get everybody to the crime scene down here get as much evidence as we can, and we'll figure out who actually did what. That way we can get all the information that we can," Harrell said.
