Landrieu: City would store monuments, Lee pedestal would remain

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

In a Sept. 17 letter to the New Orleans City Council, Mayor Mitch Landrieu reaffirmed the estimated cost of moving four Confederate monuments, pegging it at $144,000.

Landrieu wants to remove from public view the Robert E. Lee statue in Lee Circle, the PGT Beauregard equestrian statue at the entrance to City Park, the Jefferson Davis monument on Jefferson Davis Parkway and the Battle of Liberty Place monument on Iberville Street.

He said the pedestal on which the Lee statues sits would remain in place, and that all monuments could be stored at a city-owned facility at no cost. He said an anonymous donor has offered to foot the bill for the removal.
