CrimeTracker: Armed robber rides bike, wields a shot gun

“It’s kind of scary - terrifying, actually,” Chera Ward said.

People who live in the Touro neighborhood along Milan Street were surprised to hear about two separate armed robberies on their street Tuesday night. The robber was wielding a shotgun.

“I work right around the block, and I can’t believe he robbed her with a shotgun,” Ward said.

The first armed robbery happened around 9:46 in front of the Milan Lounge in the 1300 block of Milan. Police say the gunman held up a man walking on the street. Four minutes later, he struck again at Milan and Camp. Police say, in that case, the gunman struggled with a woman over her purse. They say he pushed her to the ground before taking off with it.

“We’re a close-knit neighborhood right here. We watch out for each other, and you would think this a very safe part of town right by the police station,” Arene Marks said.

Police believe the suspect is now responsible for as many as five armed robberies. Last week, they say he struck in Laurence Park at Camp and Napoleon, less than a block from the Second District Police station.

“Maybe he didn’t know they police station was here. Maybe he just doesn’t care. We are going to hunt him down, and we are going to catch him like we do,” said District Commander Paul Noel.

As police searched for the suspect, he struck three days later - twice in the Second District. Now, he’s believed to be responsible for the two on Milan Tuesday night. They say the suspect is a man on a bike who carries a shot gun and rides through the neighborhood.

“It kind of changes my thoughts on my safety at night. May be I’ll carry my pepper spray again,” resident Ann Damico said.

People who live in the area are upset. They point to surveillance cameras and even private patrols that they though was enough to keep them safe.
