NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The efforts of the New Orleans Police Department to beef up its depleted ranks while implementing federal reforms are the subject of a public hearing in a federal courtroom.

Thursday afternoon's hearing at U.S. District Court in New Orleans will deal with police hiring and recruitment efforts. It was set by a federal judge as part of the court's oversight of police reform efforts outlined in an agreement reached in 2012 between the city and the U.S. Justice Department.

The department has been trying to recruit, train and hire enough officers to boost its ranks from less than 1,200 to around 1,600.
