NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

New Orleans police have arrested a 16-year-old boy who allegedly wielded a rifle during several recent armed robberies in the Uptown area.

The suspect was arrested Friday in the area of Chestnut Street and General Pershing Street around 10:08 p.m.

Second District officers were on patrol when they noticed a teenager riding a bicycle in the area who fit the description of the armed robbery suspect. The officer called for backup and started to go after the suspect. When he turned on his lights and ordered the boy to stop.

He rode his bicycle onto the sidewalk and turned down a side street, where the officer temporarily lost sight of him.

Sixth District officers were able to follow the bicycle into a nearby parking lot. They stopped the suspect as additional officers arrived on scene. The teenager was arrested without further incident. He was in possession of a revolver, the NOPD said.

“We made a commitment to track down the individual responsible for these violent acts and take him off the streets, and that’s exactly what we did,” said NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison. “Through a strategic deployment plan, officers were proactively patrolling the area to locate the suspect. They were engaged, they were focused and they performed exactly how they were trained to perform.”

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the teen's lost known address in the 3600 block of Earhart Boulevard. Detectives say they found five smart phones, clothing described by one of the victims of the armed robbery and a lever action rifle in a folding chair bag.
