NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

Police said two teachers were robbed inside of a school near the edge of Mid-City.

The incident happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday at Success Preparatory Academy, located in the 2000 block of Bienville Street.

Children were not in class Wednesday when the armed robbery happened. However, school staff were in attendance for a professional development day.

Officers said that a teacher parked near the school and walked to the front of the building when the gunman approached. The gunman forced the teacher into the school where he robbed her of her wallet, the New Orleans Police Department said. Officers later added that a second teacher was also robbed.

“This was a choice made by this individual to commit this crime. We’re going to hold him accountable for that choice and for that decision,” NOPD Chief Michael Harrison said. “Anyone who chooses to commit this type of violent behavior, we’re not going to accept it. We’re going to pursue every lead that we get and we’re going to turn the world upside down until we find and catch these people.”

No injuries were reported during the incident. Police cleared the building, saying it was safe for staff members to be inside.

Police are searching for the gunman. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.
