Police: Scammer claims mom died, steals from elderly woman

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The NOPD wants help finding a man who stole jewelry from an elderly woman on Sept. 24.

The 93-year-old victim said the man knocked on the back door of her Elysian Fields Avenue home and asked to used her phone, claiming his mother had just died. The victim told police she felt sorry for the man and allowed him in. Once inside, the man asked to use the restroom. After going to the back of the house, the man suddenly fled.

The victim told police she walked to her room and noticed her wallet had been tampered with and her jewelry box was gone. 

The man drove away in a gray SUV that was parked in the victim's driveway. Police believe he is targeting elderly people in the area. The victim told police the man walked with a limp.
