North shore report reflects decade of strong, steady growth

COVINGTON, LA (WVUE) -

Total wages in St. Tammany Parish climbed nearly 90 percent from $1.9 billion to $3.6 billion between 2004 and 2014, according to an annual summary of economic data for the past decade.

Those numbers were analyzed by our partners at NewOrleansCityBusiness and tracked by the St. Tammany Economic Development Foundation.

The findings reflect a steady climb in population since 2004, increasing from about 210,000 to nearly 250,000 residents.

The number of hotel receipts went up 78.8 percent in the past decade and 27.6 percent in the past five years.

"I contribute these numbers to the continual slow, steady growth in St. Tammany Parish," said Brenda Bertus, CEO of STEDF. "We continue to have new businesses and new jobs come in."

Total sales climbed to nearly $5 billion in 2014, which has been on an upward swing since 2010.

"This is the highest sales have ever been," she said, adding that new retail developments have helped.

Other reports released by the St. Tammany Economic Development Foundation involved economic trends and parish growth.

In the quarterly reports, commercial building permits saw the highest increase, with 66.3 percent more permits issued year-to-date than in the comparable period last year.

The average sales price of residential real estate rose 20.1 percent compared with the second quarter of 2014.

In addition, overall growth of the parish economy increased by 3.8 percent from both the previous quarter and the corresponding quarter last year.
