Worker in critical condition after injury cleaning tanker

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

NOFD's Hazardous Materials Unit was dispatched to the Port of New Orleans Rail Yard after three members of a cleaning team began to lose consciousness while working inside a tanker.

According to NOFD, a Haz-mat team was dispatched at 9:48 a.m. on Oct. 8 after one of the members of the three-man team called for help. Fire fighters, EMS and Harbor Police arrived moments later.

According to the victims, the cleaning team was working inside a tanker when all three began to suffer the effects of oxygen deprivation. One worker managed to escape and call for help, possibly saving their lives.

Emergency personnel pulled the other two workers out of the tanker and gave them oxygen to help bring them back to consciousness. One victim regained consciousness once oxygen was administered, but the third victim remained unresponsive. The worker who called emergency personnel and the worker who returned to consciousness were taken the the hospital for observation. The third worker who didn't come to is listed in critical condition in the hospital.

All New Orleans Emergency Services personnel were cleared of the scene by 11:37 a.m.
