AFR: 1-4 feels different in 2015

The Saints have been 1-4 under Sean Payton before. But this time around, it just feels different.

In 2007 and 2012, those 1-4 starts were disappointing but there was always a sense that the team would turn it around and salvage their season.

It's hard to get that same sense this year.

"I don't want to hear anything about youth or about talent. I don't want to hear anything about anything except what do we have to do to win the game," a clearly unhappy Drew Brees said after the 39-17 defeat.

And therein lies the problem. Even at their absolute best, I'm not sure this team has enough pieces to find those ways to win on a regular basis. They've shown flashes but one has to wonder if their flaws have become too much to overcome.

Their pass rush is non-existent. Their offensive line, which was supposed to be a source of strength, has been wildly inconsistent. The running game should be better. Their lack of explosive playmakers become more obvious with each passing week.

It's hard to imagine a scenario where all those things improve and come together in time to get this season back on track. Even those teams of '07 and '12 made runs but ultimately ran out of gas at the end.

As I turned the corner and walked into the locker room Sunday, a nostalgic moment hit me. The last time I made that exact turn into that exact locker room, was in January of 2014 after the Saints had just won their first ever road playoff game. I recall the sheer joy on every players' faces that night.

That moment felt miles away when I made that same walk on Sunday. With no sign of returning anytime soon.
