Millions of people will have to retreat inland due to rising sea levels resulting from rising temperatures, according to climate change scientists.

They say cities like New Orleans and Miami are “past the point of no return,” and could be submerged by 2100, even if steps are taken to reduce global warming. The findings were released in the Oct. 13 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Scientists say without severe cuts to carbon emissions, the sea level could increase at least 14 feet. That would affect about 20 million people who live along the coast.
