8 people suffer injuries in New Orleans East fire

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A fire overnight in New Orleans East engulfed an apartment in flames with several people trapped inside. 

It happened around 3:20 a.m. on Thursday at an apartment complex in the 4400 block of Gawain Drive.

Seven of the victims were able to escape through a rear window before firefighter arrived. A neighbor was forced to escape from the flames, as well.

The victims suffered varying degrees of smoke inhalation, except an 8-year-old boy, who cut his leg while escaping through a window.

Authorities believe the fire sparked from a lit candle .

Firefighters were able to contain the damage to five other units in the 52 unit apartment complex.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the victims.
