BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) -

Republicans Billy Nungesser and John Young have a strong lead in the race for Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana, according to a newly released FOX 8/Raycom Media poll. Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden, a Democrat once considered a shoo-in for the runoff, lands in third place in the poll.

The survey of 601 registered Louisiana voters found 25% of them support Nungesser, 21% favored Young, 11% for Holden, and 4% for Elbert Guillory. Nearly 36% of those surveyed were still undecided while 3% refused to answer. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4%.

Political analyst Jim Engster says conventional wisdom would have placed Holden in a runoff with one of the two major Republican candidates. But Engster believes a saturation of political ads by Nungesser and Young have helped push them into a strong lead.

“Now, I think many people are thinking it’s going to be a runoff between the two big Republicans, Billy Nungesser and John Young,” Engster said.

Among people who said they were most likely to vote in the Oct, 24 election, Nungesser’s support increased to 28%. Young had 22%, Holden 14%, and Guillory 5% among those most likely voters. However, 28% of those voters said they were still undecided while 3% refused to answer. That portion of the poll has a margin of error of six percentage points.

The poll was paid for by Raycom television stations WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge, WVUE-TV in New Orleans, KSLA-TV in Shreveport, and KPLC-TV in Lake Charles. It was conducted by telephone from October 7 through October 13 by Multi-Quest International based in Metairie.
