NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The New Orleans police officer accused of mishandling the arrest of a suspect in a domestic battery was indicted Thursday by an Orleans Parish grand jury.

Officer Wardell Johnson is accused of botching the case of suspect Travis Boys, including his initial response to the domestic assault and actions he took after the preliminary investigation.

A FOX 8 investigation found that Johnson allegedly ignored a .40-caliber casing found at the scene of the assault that led to Boys' initial arrest. Police Chief Michael Harrison said Johnson "improperly patted down" Boys, and may have missed a .40-caliber handgun.

Boys is accused of fatally shooting officer Daryle Holloway with a .40-caliber gun,  while Holloway was transporting Boys to jail after his arrest.

Johnson was indicted on two counts of obstruction of justice and one count of malfeasance in office. His bond was set at $150,000.
