METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) -

Saints assistant coach Joe Vitt was hospitalized after chasing two people who were breaking into his neighbor's car in Old Metairie, according to a spokesperson with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

Officers say Vitt, 61, was at his Old Metairie home on Sunday at 3:50 a.m. when he noticed someone in his yard. He went outside when he saw a woman trying to enter his neighbor's car.

Vitt also noticed a man inside his car. The two perpetrators ran when they saw Vitt, according to the sheriff's office. Vitt chased them until he fell to the ground.

He suffered a broken wrist and ankle injury, according to a report from the Canal Street Chronicles.

Vitt was back at work the next day.

Vitt has been an assistant with the Saints since 2006. He served as interim head coach for 10 games in 2012, following the bounty scandal.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111 or the Sheriff’s Office burglary division at 504.364.5300.
