ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LA (WVUE) -

A burglary suspect died after being shot by deputies during an attack on an officer and a police dog, according to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office.

The incident began Tuesday afternoon after a Mandeville woman found two men burglarizing her home, said Sheriff Jack Strain. The woman gave police a description of the suspects' car, and police located it on Interstate 12. Police chased the suspects into the area of Highway 59 and Interstate 12 before the suspects stopped their vehicle off Louisiana 59 near Koop Drive and fled in different directions, Strain said.

One suspect was quickly caught, but the second, Darien Greenwood, of Covington, remained at large for several hours until a police dog was brought in to assist with the search. Deputies eventually located the suspect in the area of Armel and Little Creek roads, where they said he produced a knife and stabbed the canine as it lunged between him and a deputy. Officers opened fire on Greenwood, but it was not immediately known how many times he was hit.

He was then taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect that was taken into custody was identified as Dean Perkins, 22, of Covington. He was charged with simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling. His bond is set at $20,000, but Perkins has a probation hold on his release.

The police dog is being treated for stab wounds to the neck and shoulder.

The identities of the suspects have not been released.
