SLIDELL, LA (WVUE) - Police are investigating the death of a family dog found inside a Slidell home with a bag over its head. Investigators are not yet ready to say if the death was an accident or the result of foul play.
Slidell Police responded Monday to a possible home burglary. The homeowner said the home had been broken into and the dog was found dead. The homeowner had recently been receiving social media threats from an individual, and also had an incident of vandalism at the home two days earlier.
Detective Michael Giardina has taken over the investigation and asked for help from Slidell Animal Control. The deceased dog was preserved as evidence while investigators try to determine their next course of action.
"This is not a common occurrence and is something we aren't familiar with," Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith said. "We contacted the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine to see what our options were."
The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine agreed to perform a necropsy – or animal autopsy, and the results are expected by the end of the week.
Smith said other details of the break-in and vandalism are not being released because the investigation is ongoing.
