NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A police chase initiated by a civilian who witnessed a shooting ended in the arrests of three people. A fourth suspect remains at large, according to NOPD Sixth District Commander Ronnie Stevens.
The incident began at about 7 p.m. after a witness saw subjects in an SUV opening fire in the area of St. Mary and Constance streets. The witness called 911 and continued to follow the SUV as it drove to Calliope and eventually got onto Interstate 10.
Police initiated a pursuit of the SUV, which sped toward the Desire neighborhood and eventually struck a train that was stopped near France Road Parkway. The four occupants fled on foot; three were caught with the help of a police K-9. Police said they recovered a weapon from the SUV, and one of the arrested subjects faces a charge of felon in possession of a firearm.
Police said they were continuing to investigating the original shooting scene and whether or not anyone was hit.
Stevens said while police don't advocate civilians putting themselves in danger, he thanked the witness for their cooperation and said community involvement was important to solving crimes.
