BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) - Former Republican candidate for governor Jay Dardenne said he cannot forget everything he said about David Vitter while he was in the race, so he is supporting Democrat John Bel Edwards.
Dardenne said he did his due diligence before announcing his endorsement. Dardenne believes a Vitter governorship would hurt the GOP brand.
Edwards responded by saying he will govern across party lines.
"This election is about leadership, and I value not only Jay's endorsement, but his advice as we unite the people of Louisiana," Edwards said.
The endorsement comes as polls show Edwards leading Vitter.
"We're very excited about our campaign and the tens of thousands of conservative Louisiana voters who have jumped on board in the past week, including so many that voted for Jay. We wish Jay and his family the best," Vitter said.
The election is set for Nov. 21.
