NOPD: Woman carjacked on popular Bywater street

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - New Orleans police are looking for four men they say ambushed a woman sitting in her car Friday night in the Bywater. The woman was robbed of her vehicle.

Desiree Baiamonte and her family have owned Jack Dempsey's Restaurant in the 800 block of Poland Avenue for more than 30 years.

"We're relatively a safe neighborhood," Baiamonte said.

After closing Friday night, Baiamonte and her husband found themselves in the middle of a crime scene.

Baiamonte explains, "My husband pulled over and asked what happened and he explained there was a carjacking about 45 minutes before."

Police say a 35-year-old woman was in her car around 11:15 p.m. when four men, possibly juveniles, ran up and took the vehicle at gunpoint.

"It's scary, it's something that, you live in the city and you want to be safe and it seems like every other day you're hearing of something like this happening," McDaniel Wyatt said.

The carjacking happened just a block away from Bacchanal Wine, a popular spot on a Friday night, crowded with people.

"All we can do is arm ourselves with surveillance cameras and guns," resident C.C. Williams said.

Williams says she's heard of other recent crime in the neighborhood, including other carjackings.

"It makes us upset, it's a shame to see because a lot of people are buying property, moving in," Williams commented.

Baiamonte has no idea why the neighborhood is seeking a spike in crime, saying, "I think the ones doing these heinous crimes know the police is under staffed and they're scrambling around and there's only so much you can do with so much manpower."

For now, she and other residents say they'll keep an eye on each other, until the people responsible are put behind bars.
