ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST PARISH, LA (WVUE) - Louisiana State Police are investigating an automobile accident that left one person dead and three others injured. The incident occurred Monday, just before 10 a.m. on Highway 51.
According to police, 39-year-old Joywanne Adams was driving her car north on the highway near Palmetto Drive. At the same time, an SUV, driven by 24-year-old Marlon Pierre Jr. of Luling, was traveling south on the same stretch of road. For unknown reasons, the SUV crossed the center turn lane and struck Adams' car.
Adams was transported to University Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead. Also in Adams' car were two back seat passengers, 22-year-old Kyelajuan Bolding and a 1-year-old. Both Bolden and the 1-year-old suffered moderate injuries and were brought to University Medical Center.
Pierre also suffered moderate injuries and was transported to East Jefferson Hospital.
Police say that the 1-year-old was not properly restrained in the child seat and that the seat was not properly installed in the car. Investigators also learned that both Pierre and Adams were wearing their seat belts when the accident occurred.
Investigators believe that alcohol did not play a factor in the crash, but a blood sample was taken from Pierre. The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab will perform a toxicology analysis. Criminal charges are pending and the investigation into the crash continues.
