NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Metro New Orleans motorists will need to find an alternate crosstown route when heading west this weekend.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will close the westbound lanes on Interstate 610 beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.
The 4-1/2 mile stretch will close so crews can replace 10 expansion joints.
"The work that we are doing involves removal of a portion of the roadway in order to install the expansion joints roadway," said Bambi Hall, DOTD spokesperson. "Materials like concrete and asphalt of course they expand and contract with temperature so that is the mechanism the expansion joint itself that allows that to occur."
DOTD says drivers who normally take I-610 west should not have too much of a problem. The Saints are not at home this weekend and there are alternate routes set up.
