Jefferson Parish: Recycle your cooking oil after Thanksgiving

JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (WVUE) - People frying their turkeys this Thanksgiving are urged to recycle their cooking oil.

Jefferson Parish officials say cooking oil should never be poured down the drain because it can damage a home's plumbing and the sewer system. They say it can also damage the environment if cooking oil is dumped into a storm drain.

The Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental Affairs is making containers available at drop-off locations for recycling used cooking oil from frying holiday turkeys.

One drop off site is located in Metairie at 400 David Drive between Airline Drive and W. Metairie Avenue.  Another drop off location is in Marrero at 6440 Lapalco Boulevard, but the entrance is on Betty St.

The sites will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, but will reopen Friday. Normal operating hours of all parish drop off sites are Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All residents utilizing the sites must have a valid Louisiana Driver's license stating their Jefferson Parish address.
