NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A man shot in 2003 succumbed to his gunshot wounds 12 years later.
Tommy Brooks, 31, died on July 29, 2015 from a gunshot wound he received on Sept. 20, 2003 according to the Orleans Parish Coroner and NOPD.
The shooting took place in Central City around 5:30 p.m. over 12 years ago. NOPD officers found Brooks, who was 17-years-old at the time, lying in the middle of the road with multiple gunshot wounds to his body in the 2900 block of Dryades Street. His injuries left him paralyzed.
Brooks spent the next several years in-and-out of the hospital due to complications from his injuries according to NOPD. On July 29, 2015 around 9 a.m. Brooks died.
The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office ruled Brooks' death a murder after finding that the gunshot wounds he sustained 12 years ago caused his death.
On the same night Brooks was shot, police arrested 16-year-old Alonzo Barnes, now 29, and booked him with Attempted Second Degree Murder and Illegal Use of a Firearm.
Detectives are now consulting with the District Attorney's Office to determine if murder charges will be brought against Barnes according to NOPD.
