NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - An Uptown homeowner shoots a man he catches trying to break into his vehicle. That's after the suspect allegedly attacked the homeowner with a stick. Now, terrified neighbors speak out.
"For this to happen, is just really shocking and very scary," Uptown resident Sonja Hartner commented.
Saturday at 10:45 p.m., New Orleans police say a homeowner on Annunciation Street opened fire on a man identified by NOPD as Jordan Lowe after Lowe attempted to break into cars on the street, including the victims.
Neighbor Christian Aviles recalls, "I heard this man screaming a bunch and he was screaming at another person."
According to witnesses, the trouble started at the intersection of Annunciation and Octavia when Lowe allegedly got into a woman's unlocked vehicle, as she was inside texting. She put the vehicle in reverse and he fell out. Then, he made his way to the 5500 block, where the attack ensued
The victim, who didn't want to go on camera, tells FOX 8, Lowe acted erratically. He says when he tried to get him away from his vehicle, Lowe charged at him with a stick, and then followed him onto his front porch. The victim says he went inside, grabbed his gun, and fired three shots.
"I'm glad he was able to protect himself and his family," Aviles said.
The victim doesn't believe Lowe is connected to any other recent Uptown crimes, in fact, he says police told him, Lowe was in town from Austin, Texas, visiting friends. Still, the shooting has rattled residents of this quiet neighborhood.
Tonya Gatt says, "It just seems so out of the ordinary and concerning. It's very troubling not just for myself as a female but for the community at large."
Neighbors say its extra reason to keep an eye out for each other.
Jordan Lowe is in stable condition at a hospital. The victim suffered bruises and required stitches for a cut he received during the attack.
