Local non-profit to address Confederate monuments debate

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Local non-profit organization, Monumental Task Committee, Inc. (MTC) will hold a press conference Tuesday at 2 p.m., to make what it calls a major announcement regarding Mayor Mitch Landrieu's plan to remove Confederate monuments in New Orleans.

The organization works to restore and maintain the city's monuments.

The announcement follows a New Orleans City Council meeting on December 1, where members introduced an ordinance aiming to take down four Confederate monuments.

If passed, the monuments would be declared public nuisances, and removed.

Critics argue they are a part of the city's history and should stay in place.

The debate over the monuments was sparked by a brutal killing of 9 people at a church in Charleston, South Carolina in June 2015.

A press conference will take place Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Margaret Haughery Monument in Triangular Park, between Prytania and Camp Streets.
