NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Orleans Parish Sheriff's Deputies and medical personnel responded to a Sunday morning incident inside a jail cell involving inmate Euric Cain, the man accused of shooting Tulane Medical student Peter Gold.
An OPSO spokesperson said that at 8:30 a.m., Cain alerted an OPSO medical professional that he was having suicidal thoughts. The mental health professional on duty, was immediately notified. As the personnel were trying to enter the cell, Cain attempted to hurt himself using a sweatshirt, according to the spokesperson.
The personnel attended to Cain, who never lost consciousness. He was brought to University Hospital as a precaution.
The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.
Cain, plead not guilty in the Nov 20th shooting that left Gold injured. Gold intervened in the apparent abduction and robbery of a woman on Magazine Street, prior to being shot. Cain is also accused of carjacking and raping a couple just one day after the shooting incident.
Cain is facing numerous charges including attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and aggravated kidnapping.
