Christmas came early for some students in Central City, where the NOPD's Sixth's District hosted its annual bicycle giveaway on Saturday.

The event, known as Christmas in the Sixth, brought 150 kids to the district station offering them a hot meal a new bicycle free of charge.

Organizers say the goal is to provide an opportunity for the children in the district to meet and interact with the men and women who patrol their neighborhoods every day, and provide help to families in need during the holiday season.

The annual event has provided free meals, toys and new bicycles for the community since 2006.

The participating students were selected by their schools and participating schools were selected by the NOPD Sixth District.
