NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

Mandeville police officers will offer free rides on New Year’s Eve to area residents who have too much to drink.

Police Chief Rich Richard said Tuesday that the department is happy to provide citizens with a safe option. All you need to do is call the Police Department at (985) 626-9711 to request a ride.

Police said alcohol-related crashes are 100 percent avoidable, and there is no excuse for anyone to get behind the wheel after drinking. Officers will be on the lookout for impaired drivers and will have zero tolerance for anyone caught drinking and driving.

Mayor Donald Villere stressed this is a free community service aimed at ensuring everyone has a safe New Year’s Eve celebration.

“Once you get pulled over by the police or become involved in an accident, it is too late,” Villere said. “So call before you get behind the wheel.”
