NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

The Army Corps of Engineers is expecting a big surge in the Mississippi River next week, which could lead to the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway.

The surge is currently approaching St. Louis and is responsible for flooding across the Midwest.

As part of their Phase 1 plan to deal with the rising river, the Corps is currently inspecting levees twice a week. That will likely be stepped up to daily inspections for seepage next week.

The Carrollton Gage is currently over 12 feet. Additional “flood fight” procedures will be triggered if it continues to rise.
