KENNER, LA (WVUE) - A Kenner man was arrested Friday after one of the "celebratory" rounds he fired on New Year's Eve ricocheted off a metal pole and struck a woman in the stomach, according to police.
Brandon Smith, 26, faces aggravated battery, negligent injuring and illegal discharge of a firearm.
At approximately 12:07 a.m., the Kenner Police Department responded to a report of a female shot at a housing complex in the 1000 block of 31st Street. When officers arrived, they learned that Smith, standing on a second-floor balcony, shot several rounds toward an empty lot, one of them striking the 40-year-old victim as she was getting out of a car.
Police obtained a search warrant and found a .380-caliber handgun hidden inside a vent in the apartment where Smith was staying. During questioning, police said Smith to shooting the gun in the air in celebration of New Year's Eve.
The victim was taken to University Hospital, where she was treated and released.
Smith remains in custody, and no bond has been set.
