MANDEVILLE, LA (WVUE) - Road rage turned what could've been a simple car accident into an dangerous encounter.
According to State Police, two cars collided on LA 59 near Interstate 12 in Mandeville on Jan. 1 around 10:30 p.m. Police say 24-year-old John L. Reed II was driving southbound on LA 59 when he stopped at a red light before attempting to turn left onto I-12. At that moment, 45-year-old John M. Elarton, who was heading Northbound on LA 59, ran a red light and crashed into Reed's truck.
Elarton then fled the scene, continuing to drive north on LA 59. Reed followed and managed to catch up with Elarton. According to LSP, the two drivers pulled over and exchanged words. Then, as Elarton attempted to leave again, Reed pulled out a gun and fired multiple rounds into the back of Elarton's car.
Police say a second chase between the two drivers ensued, but this time Reed called police to report the Hit and Run.
Troopers caught up with the two men on US 190 just north of I-12 and managed to pull over both vehicles. Once they determined what had happened, officers arrested Reed for Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property and Illegal use of Weapons or Dangerous Instrumentalities. Elarton was issued a summons for disregard of traffic control.
