BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) - The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission voted to close deer hunting season in areas affected by the Morganza and Bonnet Carre spillways if and when they are opened.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced plans to open the Bonnet Carre Spillway at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 10 and could open the Morganza Spillway on Monday, Jan. 11.
The closures go into effect a half hour after sunset on the dates the spillways are opened.
Wildlife officials say all land within the Morganza Spillway would be closed to deer hunting, from the Morganza control structure, south to Interstate 10 and from Interstate 10 south within the Atchafalaya basin protection levees.
Deer hunting will also be prohibited in a buffer area east of the Morganza Spillway, as well as the Atchafalaya National Wildlife Refuge, the Bayou Des Ourses Area and the Indian Bayou Area.
The commission says the closure will remain in effect until it is rescinded by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
