NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Walmart announced Friday plans to shut down 269 stores worldwide.
More than 150 of those stores will be closed in the United States, possibility leaving nearly 10,000 workers jobless.
The company is shutting down eight stores in Louisiana. They include Kentwood, Independence, Mamou, Colfax, Lake Arthur, Iowa, Clinton and Zwolle.
More than 100 of the closures will affect the smallest format stores, Walmart Express, which has been in pilot since 2011, according to the company's website.
Walmart is also closing 23 neighborhood markets, 12 Supercenters, seven stores in Puerto Rico, six discount centers and four Sam's Clubs.
More than 100 other stores will shut down in Latin America.
Walmart operates nearly 11,600 stores worldwide.
