HAMMOND, LA (WVUE) - A three-car crash on I-55 in Hammond claimed the life of an Arkansas woman and left her husband in critical condition.
According to Louisiana State Police, 26-year-old Brittany Barber Spears of Franklinton was driving a 2004 Toyota Avalon north on I-55 when she crashed into the back of a 2014 Ford F-150 driven by 62-year-old Thomas J Stephens of Amite. Spear's car then crossed the median into I-55 southbound and collided head-on with a 2013 Kia Optima driven by 64-year-old Charles Williams of Sherwood, Arkansas.
Mariam Williams, the Optima's front seat passenger, died on the scene as a result of the crash. Police say Charles Williams was transported from the scene of the crash to North Oaks Hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.
Spears sustained moderate injuries in the crash, according to police. Troopers do not suspect impairment to have been a factor in the crash, however, police say blood samples were obtained from both drivers and will be analyzed.
Stephens, the driver of the F-150, was not injured in the crash. Police say he voluntarily gave a breath sample at the scene and showed no trace amounts of alcohol.
The crash remains under investigation.
