NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - GMB Racing was formed six months ago by Gayle and Tom Benson. In a true underdog story two of their horses, Mo Tom and Tom's Ready, finish first and second in the Lecomte Stakes. The race represents the first leg of the Fair Grounds triple crown.
"Man I'm so excited, I can't talk," said Tom Benson. "I didn't expect 1-2. I expected one, but I didn't expect two to come in there. He ran a great race. Both of them did. It was a great day for us. Hey we want both of them in the Kentucky Derby."
"I saw Tom's Ready, Mr. Tom's other horse moving well on the outside, I didn't want him to lose me. Get to far in front of me so I couldn't catch him. I jumped behind him at the quarter pole. Thought I had him fairly easy, but then he made me work a little bit to get by him. Two really nice horses, I think they have a bright future," said Mo Tom's jockey Corey Lanerie.
"I really thought the neat thing about the race today, and it kind of caught me off guard. Mr. Benson came down to the winner's circle and the sizable crowd here really cheered, " said Mo Tom's trainer Tom Amoss. "They love the Bensons', and rightfully so. They're great for New Orleans, and they're great for Tom Amoss Racing Stable."
Next up for Mo Tom is the Risen Star Stakes in a month. Then in March it's the Louisiana Derby, and then all eyes focus on the Kentucky Derby.
