Former New Orleans Archbishop Francis B. Schulte dies

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

New Orleans retired Archbishop Francis B. Schulte has passed away.

He died at the age of 89 in his hometown of Philadelphia.

Schulte served as bishop of Wheeling-Charleston, WV from 1985 to 1988 before coming to New Orleans in 1989.

Monday morning, before the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial march, Archbishop Gregory Aymond spoke about Schulte's life. 

"We mourn his death he was a man who truly gave of himself as a priest and as a bishop," Aymond said. "A man of great love and great sacrifice, we will certainly miss him, but his legacy lives on in the Archdiocese of New Orleans."

Schulte served in New Orleans archbishop from 1989 until his retirement in 2001. His funeral arrangements are pending.
