New Orleans, La (WVUE) - New research reveals women can take on the flu virus better than men.
According to findings in the American Journal of Physiology high levels of estrogen in the female body help to stop the virus in its track.
The hormone estrogen acts an antiviral against the flu virus.
Researchers studied nasal cells and found the flu virus had difficulty replicating in female cells.
Less ability to replicate means women who did get the flu bug were less affected.
Men experienced more severe symptoms and a greater likelihood to spread the virus to others.
Estrogen has also been shown to work as an antiviral against HIV, Ebola and hepatitis.
