Boy, 3, killed while asleep in New Orleans East after grandmother's gun fires

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) -

A 3-year-old boy was shot and killed early Wednesday morning in New Orleans East.

New Orleans Police received a call around 2:12 a.m. about a 3-year-old that was shot.

When they arrived on the scene in the 5600 block of Red Maple Drive in New Orleans East, they found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Initial police reports say the grandmother, 45, and her grandson were asleep in the same bed.

The woman, who is employed as a security guard, had a gun under a pillow.

At some point, the gun discharged striking the boy in the chest.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died.

The grandmother is currently being questioned by investigators.

The investigation is ongoing.
