New details in child's shooting death released during grandmother's bond hearing

Family comes to defense of woman arrested in grandson's shooting death

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The grandmother facing charges in her young grandson's death tested positive for gun residue.

That came out of Deonca Kennedy's bond hearing, which just wrapped up.

Police said she also had a graze wound to the arm. A judge set the 42-year-old's bond at $35,000.

Investigators said a gun under Kennedy's pillow somehow discharged Wednesday morning and killed her three-year old grandson who was sleeping in the bed next to her.

It happened in her New Orleans east home on Red Maple Dr.

Police booked Kennedy with negligent homicide, second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and child desertion.
