Kenner Police arrest school bus driver, student following fight

KENNER, LA (WVUE) - A Jefferson Parish school bus driver and a 13-year-old Roosevelt Middle School male student have been arrested after getting into a physical fight. The incident occurred Friday at 7:15 a.m. in the 1200 block of Veterans Boulevard in Kenner.

Police say that officers received several calls about a fight on a school bus. Responding officers talked with the bus driver, identified as 44-year-old Michelle Bratton of Luling, who said that the 13-year-old would not sit in his assigned seat on the bus. Bratton got out of her seat and as she approached the student, she told him to get off of the bus. Bratton told police that she and the student began arguing and that the student spat on her, before the two became involved in a physical fight.

Officers learned that cell phone footage of the incident was taken. Police say that officers reviewed the video which showed Bratton, outside the bus, striking the student multiple times in the head with a closed hand.

Bratton was arrested and charged with simple battery. Police also arrested the student and charged him with battery on a school official. The student was also charged with simple criminal damage to property for kicking and breaking a bus window after the fight. Bratton was booked into jail but released due to overcrowding, police say.

The Jefferson Parish School Board has launched an independent investigation into the incident.
