Friends remember father & son killed in gun shop

PEARL RIVER COUNTY, MS (WVUE) - A father and son are dead after being shot inside their gun shop, following an altercation with another man and his son.

"I'm still in shock about this, my wife, she's upset, she's crying," the victims' friend, Jeff Stockstill said Sunday.

Friends of 44-year-old Jason McLemore and his 17-year-old son, Jacob, say it's hard to imagine they lost their lives inside the gun shop they so cherished.

"It was an asset to the community, a lot of people used the gun shop for repairs," Jeff Burks said.

Stockstill adds, "This has been a family business for a long time here."

Investigators with the Pearl River County Sheriff's Office say the shooting happened around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. Jason McLemore's wife was manning the front counter when 52-year-old Audy McCool and his 29-year-old son Michael arrived to pick up a gun that was being repaired.

"There was some contention over a $25 fee that was to be charged," Chief Deputy Shane Tucker, explained.

McLemore called her husband, who showed up with their son, to de-escalate the situation.

Tucker explains, "When they entered the store, the argument almost immediately started over this fee and shortly thereafter it turned physical."

At some point, firearms were drawn and shots fired. Investigators believe Michael McCool used a 40 caliber pistol to shoot both Jason and Jacob McLemore. They died on the scene. McCool and his father were also injured and airlifted to area hospitals.

"It was just an unfortunate situation that took place. We're praying for the family for sure," Burks said.

Stockstill says, "I never would've expected anything like this in this community."

Investigators aren't saying yet what charges may be filed in this case. Meanwhile, friends of the two victims say the community will rally to support their loved ones.

Audy and Michael McCool are both listed in stable condition. Audy is being treated at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg and Michael at University Medical Center in New Orleans.
