NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy was shot early Tuesday morning in the 5300 block of Douglas Street near the intersection with Egania Street.

He has been identified as Steven Arnold, 35. Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said he is in "serious condition" after the shooting.

Around 6:10 a.m., a Drug Enforcement Agency Task Force was executing a search warrant at a house in the 5300 block of Douglas Street when a male suspect shot the JPSO Deputy assigned to the task force, according to the latest statement from the New Orleans Police Department.

The suspect is in custody.

Arnold was taken to University Medical Center.

Law enforcement personnel in DEA jackets were seen at the hospital.

The special agent in charge of the task force is the way to the hospital. Since the deputy was working on the task force, he is considered a federal agent. As such, the Federal Bureau of Investigation may become involved in the investigation.

Louisiana State Police blocked Interstate 10 on ramps along the route the deputy was being transported.

JPSO spokesman Col. John Fortunato said in a statement released earlier the deputy was a JPSO Task Force narcotics agent. He was shot several times while taking part in a narcotics operation on Douglas Street, according to the statement.

Police are expanding the scene. At least one individual was seen being led away from the scene in handcuffs.
