NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A Jefferson parish Sheriff's deputy shot early Tuesday morning during a narcotics task force operation in New Orleans.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand identified the deputy as Stephen Arnold, 35.
Normand said Arnold was shot five times; once in the neck and four other areas of his body. He is in serious but stable condition after two hours of surgery.
Normand said a warrant was being served on a home in the 5300 block of Douglas Street in the Holy Cross area of the Lower Ninth Ward.
DEA special agent says Arnold was shot while making entry into the house.
The FBI is now leading the investigation.
"Really good officer, minds his Ps and Qs, worked on the task force for several years," Normand said.
Arnold's girlfriend is at the hospital, Normand said.
Normand said Arnold is stationed in Gretna.
The DEA operation is focusing on heroin and violent offenders as part of a seven month investigation. Arnold was part of a morning raid conducted in connection with that investigation.
Eight law enforcement teams took part in the DEA raids, mostly in New Orleans east.
The investigation was an extension of the Wild, Wild, East raids from last year that netted 111 arrests.
