Uptown house fire kills 56-year-old man

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - One man escaped and a 56-year-old man died in an Uptown house fire early Tuesday morning.

The NOFD received the 911 call at 6:44 a.m. reporting a fire in a three-unit dwelling in the 800 block of Milan Street.

When the first crews arrived on the scene they found heavy flames on both sides of the second floor of the building. The fire was brought under control at 7:14 a.m.

One resident living on the first of the building made it out. But firefighters later discovered the body of a 56-year-old man near the front door of his second floor apartment. The, who had suffered severe burns, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the fire to the building at 814 Milan Street. The apartment where the fire started suffered major damage. The other two apartments in the building suffered extensive smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Because the fire involved a death, the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will be assisting with the investigation.
