NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

An Orleans Parish sheriff’s deputy was injured Wednesday during a training exercise at the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office Gun Range.

The accident happened at about 2 p.m. The deputy, identified as Gene Law, was treated at University Medical Center for a non-life-threatening gunshot to the hand. It happened when Law’s gun malfunctioned during firearms training, the Sheriff's Office said.

“We are relieved that Deputy Law wasn’t seriously injured,” Sheriff Marlin Gusman said. “There are always inherent risks when working as a law enforcement officer, and even during training, the importance of being safe around firearms can’t be underestimated.”

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident.
