Orleans District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro gets in on the debate over reforming marijuana laws, suggesting people think about 2014's Bourbon Street shooting incident while debating the issue.

"My office is responsible for the prosecution of too many crimes of violence – such as the 2014 Bourbon Street shooting – that were motivated by nothing more than a marijuana deal gone wrong," said Cannizzaro in a written statement. "As District Attorney, I am focused on the apprehension and prosecution of violent criminals.  However, I will review the proposed ordinance."

New Orleans City Councilwoman Susan Guidry proposes allowing police to give verbal warnings for first time marijuana possession and written warnings for second possessions. She proposes third and fourth violations carry fines. She thinks the change would free police to focus on more serious crimes and keep non-violent marijuana offenders out of jail.
