NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - Police responded Wednesday to the second shooting in as many days in the Central Business District.
Gunfire erupted just after 2:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Canal Street, where police said a 24-year-old man was shot in the face. Police have one suspect in custody. The victim is in stable condition.
NOPD Chief Michael Harrison said the victim and the gunman, identified as 24-year-old Justin Lewis, were walking together when they got into an argument. Lewis allegedly pulled a gun and opened fire. The victim then ran into a novelty shop in the 700 block of Canal while Lewis fled on foot. He was picked up on Burgundy Street.
The chief said officers and troopers were already out in force ahead of tonight's parades. When we asked about this being the second mid-afternoon shooting downtown in two days, Harrison said the department is doing its best to curb this type of violence.
When officers arrested Lewis they also confiscated a weapon.
On Tuesday afternoon, a shooting at the intersection of Canal and Rampart left one man in critical condition. Police have not made an arrest in that case.
